GOVERNOR RISCH ORDERS STATE
RESPONSE TO WEST NILE VIRUS

BOISE – Governor Jim Risch today signed a disaster proclamation in response to Ada County’s request for assistance in dealing with West Nile Virus.  Ada County Commissioners voted Thursday afternoon to ask for help from the state.

“There will be state assistance provided to Ada County as a result of their request.  The state and county will now work together in determining a plan of attack and areas of responsibilities.  The spread of West Nile Virus is growing and more resources are needed to respond to the problem.  Most importantly, it is incumbent for individuals to protect themselves and follow recommendations to prevent infection,” said Risch.

As of Friday afternoon the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare reported there were 151 confirmed cases of West Nile Virus in Idaho, with 14 new cases since yesterday.  Canyon County has the most cases at 40, followed by Ada County at 35.

Anticipating additional requests for state assistance by counties, Governor Risch also signed an Executive Order directing several state agencies to work with Idaho counties in combating West Nile Virus.

“The Executive Order I signed today directs several of my state agencies to work with counties who want assistance to find out what options are available for mosquito abatement and what resources can be used to combat West Nile Virus.  This will also determine the standards to access state resources if the county moves forward with a disaster assistance request,” Risch said.

The departments involved include Agriculture, Fish and Game, Health and Welfare, Environmental Quality and the Bureau of Homeland Security.

The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare has a comprehensive web site on West Nile Virus with daily updates on confirmed cases of West Nile by county.  The web page can be found at www.westnile.idaho.gov.
