GOVERNOR RISCH SIGNS MEMORANDUM FOR
WEST NILE VIRUS ASSISTANCE

BOISE – Governor Jim Risch today signed an Implementation Memorandum that will allow Canyon County to proceed with their Mosquito Control Action Plan to combat the West Nile Virus. Governor Risch had signed a state disaster proclamation on August 14 and county officials moved forward to complete a plan for mosquito control.

Governor Risch met with Canyon County Commissioner David Ferdinand late Friday afternoon and reviewed the county’s plan. A state working group consisting of representatives from the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, Department of Environmental Quality, Department of Agriculture and Department of Fish and Game also reviewed the plan and recommended approval to the governor.

“The county has put together a plan to combat the mosquito populations that cause the West Nile Virus. The state will provide funding to assist them in their efforts to combat this serious problem,” said Risch. “The West Nile Virus is preventable and while the state and county work together to reduce the chance of contracting the disease, I urge individuals to protect themselves by using repellent or covering exposed skin.”

The proposed plan will cost $323,530, with the state paying $250,000 of the total cost.

“I appreciate the Governor taking the time on such a busy day when his property tax relief bill is being considered to review the plan and give his approval. This will allow us to implement our plan and provide the public with 48 hours notice before any spraying begins. We also appreciate the willingness of the state to assist the citizens of Canyon County in our fight against the West Nile Virus,” said Commissioner Ferdinand.

As of Friday there have been 440 Idaho residents diagnosed with the West Nile Virus. Canyon County has the most positive findings at 112.
