GOVERNOR RECEIVES RESIGNATION NOTICE OF STATE SENATOR GERRY SWEET

BOISE – Governor Jim Risch received the resignation notice of District 20 State Senator Gerry Sweet at 4:20 p.m. Thursday. Sweet resigned his seat to oversee the Idaho District offices of incoming First District Congressman Bill Sali.

“I want to thank Senator Sweet for his service to Idaho in the State Senate. He represented his district very well and has made the decision to continue serving Idaho in a different capacity,” said Risch.

Governor Risch has notified Republican Legislative District Chair Julie Pipal of the resignation. Idaho Code 59-904A requires the legislative district committee to submit three names to the governor within 15 days. Once the names are submitted the governor has 15 days to appoint a replacement from the list.

Legislative District 20 rules require the chair to call a meeting of the District within 10 days after the occurrence of the vacancy and after giving at least 48 hours notice. Once the three nominees have been selected the chair has two days to submit the names to the Governor listed in order of preference.

Nominees for the vacant position must have resided within the legislative district and have been qualified electors for at least one year. They must also be a citizen of the United States and at least 21 years of age.

Senator Sweet submitted his resignation to Governor Risch since the Legislature was not in session, in accordance to Idaho Code 59-902(3).
