RISCH APPOINTS GORDON PETRIE
AS DISTRICT JUDGE

BOISE – Governor Jim Risch today announced the appointment of Magistrate Judge Gordon W. Petrie as a District Judge for the Third Judicial District.  The appointment is effective July 1 and is a new judicial seat approved by the Legislature in the 2006 session.

Petrie was first appointed to the bench as a Third District Magistrate Judge in 1989.  His tenure was interrupted with his deployment to Kuwait and Iraq from June 2004 until November 2005.  He is a Colonel in the Idaho Army National Guard and is the Deputy Brigade Commander of the 116th Brigade Combat Team.  He returned to the bench in Emmett following his tour of duty.

“The Judicial Council sent me three outstanding candidates to consider for this appointment.  I am very pleased to announce today that I am appointing Gordon Petrie to the bench as a District Judge in the Third Judicial District,” said Governor Risch.  “Gordon will be an excellent District Judge.  His experience as a magistrate will serve him well as does his leadership in the National Guard.”

Prior to his appointment as a Magistrate Judge in 1989 Petrie was in private practice in Lewiston from 1983 to 1988.  He also served as the Prosecuting Attorney for Nez Perce County from 1977 through 1982.  Petrie was the President of the Idaho Prosecuting Attorney’s Association in 1982.

Petrie is a graduate of Idaho State University and received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Idaho in 1976.  He is married, has three children and four grandchildren.

Idaho is divided into seven judicial districts.  The Third District comprises the counties of Adams, Washington, Payette, Gem, Canyon and Owyhee.  There are 6 judges serving in the Third District.
