 NEW GOVERNOR TAKES OFFICE,
HAILS KEMPTHORNE APPOINTMENT

(BOISE) Lt. Governor Jim Risch became Idaho’s 31st Governor following the U.S. Senate’s confirmation of Dirk Kempthorne as Secretary of the Interior early Friday morning.

“The Secretary of State received Governor Kempthorne’s resignation letter by fax at 12:57 p.m. Friday and in accordance with the Constitution and statutes I became the governor,” said Risch.  “I am truly humbled by this opportunity.  Vicki and I love this state and its people, and I will vigorously fulfill my responsibilities as the state’s Chief Executive.”

Risch added that, “this is a big day for Idaho and we are very excited for Dirk Kempthorne.  I told him we are very proud of him, and he can be proud of his public service here in Idaho.  I know that he will make Idahoans and the nation proud with his service as our Secretary of the Interior.”

Kempthorne responded, “Jim, you will make a great governor for Idaho.”

A public swearing in ceremony and inauguration will take place on June 2 at the State Capitol.

“We will announce the details of the June 2nd inauguration and other events that are being planned at an upcoming press conference.  At that time there will also be an announcement on appointments to my staff,” Risch said.  A press conference will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the Office of Governor Risch.

In his first day as the Governor of Idaho he is touring the Juvenile Corrections Center and attending the Fisherman’s breakfast in St. Anthony.  Risch will then tour the Fremont-Madison Irrigation District and visit Sun-Glo of Idaho, a potato processing facility in Sugar City.
