VETERAN ADMINISTRATOR NAMED TO LEAD DEPARTMENT OF JUVENILE CORRECTIONS

(BOISE) – Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter today appointed Sharon Harrigfeld, a veteran administrator of juvenile justice and correctional programs, to become the new director of the Idaho Department of Juvenile Corrections beginning August 1. She succeeds Larry Callicutt, who is retiring.

“We’re losing a great director and a valued member of my team with Larry’s departure. His dedication, experience and professionalism will be sorely missed,” Governor Otter said. “At the same time, I couldn’t ask for a more qualified, better prepared or more committed person than Sharon to be taking the reins. I know that Juvenile Corrections won’t miss a beat under her leadership. The people of Idaho will continue getting the kind of protection they deserve and our troubled youths will get the firm and just guidance and direction they need.”

Harrigfeld has been administrator of Juvenile Corrections’ Community Operations and Programs Services Division since April 2007. She previously was a juvenile justice planner for the department for almost 12 years, administrator of the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention for the Governor’s Commission for Children and Youth for eight years, and a consultant on juvenile justice and substance abuse issues for seven years.

She has a bachelor’s degree on sociology from Boise State University and a master’s degree in community counseling from the College of Idaho in Caldwell.

“Our department has been fortunate to have strong directors who have developed a strong reputation for transparency and positive outcomes. I have been a part of their leadership team and worked beside them to develop a system for juvenile offenders, their families and communities that is considered one of the best in the nation,” Harrigfeld said. “It is my desire to continue these efforts and keep the momentum moving on a positive course.”
