GOVERNOR OTTER MARKS WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH
Idaho Teens Honored For 'Idaho Young Women Making Policy' Essays

(BOISE) – Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter today recognized three Idaho teen-agers as future leaders after their award-winning participation in the Governor’s “Idaho Young Women Making Policy” essay contest.

As part of the celebration of March as National Women’s History Month, Governor Otter challenged young women to write an essay describing how they would use State public policy to create change or promote an idea.

Stephanie Turner of Boise, a student at Borah High School, will receive a $1,000 scholarship funded by State Farm Insurance for winning first place in the essay contest.  Stephanie’s essay focused on the importance of passing stricter laws related to cell phone use while driving.

Natalie Eguez of Boise, also a student at Borah High School, will receive a $500 State Farm Insurance scholarship for winning second place in the contest.  Third-place recognition went to Hailey Eggleston of Mountain View High School in Meridian.

“State Farm Insurance is proud to support the Governor’s initiatives that encourage young women to become active participants in state governance and their local communities,” State Farm Public Affairs Specialist Maria Ventura said.

“I am very proud of all the young Idaho women who participated in this essay contest.  To highlight the importance of this month, I wanted to encourage civic participation and inspire our bright young women to think about their role in developing public policy,” Governor Otter said.  “Women are a part of every bit of Idaho’s history, and I am happy this month draws attention to their contributions – past, present and future.”

Governor Otter recognized the contest winners at a ceremony in his office today.  Students in the “History of Women in Idaho” course at Boise State University also participated in the ceremony as Governor Otter signed a proclamation making March 5, 2010, Idaho Women’s History Day in Idaho.

The contest winners were spending the afternoon with some of the female members of the Governor’s Cabinet.   Additionally, the winners were scheduled to join female members of the Governor’s staff and Cabinet later at a “Women Making Herstory” dinner.
