        WHEREAS, in 2005, a total of 28,238 motor vehicle crashes occurred in Idaho, killing 275 people and injuring 14,436, at a cost to Idahoans of some $1,776,645,991; and

        WHEREAS, impaired driving caused approximately 36 percent of those deaths; and

        WHEREAS, driving under the influence (DUI) is unacceptable, it puts our families at risk, and Idahoans will not tolerate the senseless death and injury on our state’s roadways caused by those who choose to drive impaired; and

        WHEREAS, community-based anti-DUI strategies including education, effective laws, and strong law enforcement through weekly anti-DUI saturation patrols have been proven to be successful in reducing impaired driving; and

        WHEREAS, the State of Idaho is a partner in that effort to make our highways, roads and streets safer;

        NOW, THEREFORE, I, JAMES E. RISCH, Governor of the State of Idaho, do hereby proclaim August 9, 2006 through September 4, 2006 to be

IDAHO’S IMPAIRED DRIVING CRACKDOWN

and hereby call upon all citizens, government agencies, business leaders, hospitals, schools, and public and private institutions in Idaho to promote awareness of the impaired driving problem, to support programs and policies to reduce the incidence of impaired driving, to promote safer and healthier behaviors regarding the use of alcohol and other drugs, and to provide opportunities for all Idahoans to participate in saving lives this Labor Day Holiday period.
