WHEREAS, each summer thousands of families need the assistance of food pantries and shelters to provide enough food for their children who receive free and reduced price meals from the state school lunch program during the school year; and WHEREAS, Idaho ranks eighth in the prevalence of childhood hunger and fifty thousand Idaho children go to bed hungry each night; and WHEREAS, the demand for food by needy families has doubled this summer and the supply of available food at food pantries and shelters is rapidly dwindling; and WHEREAS, many working families need help providing food for their children. These families are often hesitant to seek help and when they do, they are more likely to turn to a small community pantry or meal center rather than apply for State or federal aid for temporary problems; and WHEREAS, the Pack the Track Committee is holding pack the Track Racing Against Hunger, August 9th-11th at the Meridian Speedway, collecting food to be distributed throughout Idaho by non-profit organizations who will give the food to needy families making it easy to the community to donate food to help needy Idahoans; and NOW, THEREFORE, I, James E. Risch, Governor of the State of Idaho do hereby proclaim August 9th through the 11th, 2006, to be PACK THE TRACK RACING AGAINST HUNGER DAYS in Idaho, and do urge all citizens to remember that the need for food by
children of needy families is extremely high this year, and to donate to an
agency that provides food to needy families, or to seek help with food for their
own family if necessary.
