WHEREAS, the Civilian Conservation
Corps was created on March 31, 1933, by the Administration of Franklin Delano
Roosevelt as part of the Emergency Relief Act; and
WHEREAS, the Civilian Conservation
Corps provided useful conservation work for over three million unemployed young
men during the century’s worst national economic depression and provided them
with opportunities to learn life-time skills which became careers; and
WHEREAS, the efforts of these
young men resulted in the planting of millions of trees; the construction of
lookout towers; the construction of thousands of miles of telephone lines,
roads, and trails; the fighting of forest fires; the creation of new parks; and
upgrading of existing parks and campgrounds; and
WHEREAS, the accomplishment of
this work benefited Idaho and brought satisfaction and pride to members of the
Civilian Conservation Corps who participated in these programs and their efforts
gained the respect of grateful Idahoans and Americans; and
WHEREAS, March 31 will mark the
73rd anniversary of the creation of the Civilian Conservation Corps;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, DIRK
KEMPTHORNE, Governor of the State of Idaho, do hereby proclaim March 31, 2006,
to be
C I V I L I A N C O N S E R V A T I O N
C O R P S D A Y
in Idaho, and I encourage all Idahoans to express their appreciation and
thanks to the alumni of the Civilian Conservation Corps as they celebrate their
73rd anniversary.
