WHEREAS, The Idaho Foodbank distributed more than 5.6 million pounds of food in 2005 and in collaboration with its donors and partner agencies over the past 22 years has distributed more than 55 million pounds of donated food throughout Idaho; and WHEREAS, about 205,000 Idahoans, including 55,000 children, are unsure whether they will have enough food for their next meal, and one in eight Idaho children – 49,750 children – are at risk of going to bed hungry every night, and 183,000 residents of Idaho live in poverty; and WHEREAS, in 2005 food assistance became necessary and was provided through the Foodbank’s three warehouses at no cost to 81,000 Idahoans more than 600,000 times, and of that total number, children received food assistance 249,000 times, and senior citizens received food assistance 159,000 times; and WHEREAS, The Idaho Foodbank's vast network of 8,500 volunteers contributed more than 45,000 hours in 2005, and generous donors throughout the State contributed 779,000 pounds during food drives in 2006; and WHEREAS, The Idaho Foodbank is committed to nourishing children through a variety of programs and has established a goal that no child in Idaho should go hungry; and WHEREAS, in its ongoing fight to eliminate hunger in Idaho, The Idaho Foodbank this week celebrates its 22nd anniversary, the sixth year of its new facility at 3562 South T.K. Avenue in Boise, World Food Day 2006, the seventh anniversary of its Kids Café program, which provides snacks and meals for low-income elementary school children, and the ninth anniversary of Chefs to the Rescue, the Foodbank’s prepared-food rescue program; NOW, THEREFORE, I, JAMES E. RISCH, Governor of the State of Idaho, do hereby proclaim October 16-20, 2006 IDAHO FOODBANK WEEK
