WHEREAS, innovation and parental choice is an important element of Idaho’s public education system; and WHEREAS, the Idaho Legislature recognized these important elements and passed the Idaho Public Charter School law in 1998; and WHEREAS, there now are more than 8,000 students in 28 public charter schools across the state of Idaho; and WHEREAS, Idaho public charter schools are bringing fresh approaches to public education that renew the excitement of learning among students who have struggled in traditional education settings; and WHEREAS, the demand for public charter schools is illustrated by the parents of more than 4,500 students who are on waiting lists to enroll in charter schools; and WHEREAS, Idaho public charter schools have a demonstrated record of success through higher-than-average Idaho Standard and Achievement Test scores; and WHEREAS, continuing the advancement of innovation, parental choice and excellence in education is a desirable goal that improves education for all Idaho students; NOW, THEREFORE, I, C.L. “BUTCH” OTTER, Governor of the State of Idaho, do hereby proclaim February 15, 2007 PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOL DAY in Idaho.
