WHEREAS, Alzheimer’s disease is a degenerative brain disorder that gradually destroys a person’s memory and ability to learn, reason, make judgments, communicate and carry out daily activities; and WHEREAS, as Alzheimer’s worsens, individuals may also experience changes in personality and behavior, such as anxiety, suspicion, agitation, as well as delusions or hallucinations, as well as eroding thoughts, feelings and behavior, eventually leading to death; and WHEREAS, today, there are more than 5 million Americans with Alzheimer’s disease, with more than 50,000 currently diagnosed in Idaho; and WHEREAS, while there is no cure for Alzheimer’s, new treatments are on the horizon as a result of accelerating insight into the biology of the disease; and WHEREAS, Alzheimer’s disease is being fought through several approaches, and promising early studies are spurring further rigorous research, producing results that show effective care and support can improve quality of life for individuals; and WHEREAS, some of the most exiting preliminary evidence suggests that strategies for general healthy aging also may help reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s; and WHEREAS, the State of Idaho thanks the Alzheimer’s Associations Greater Idaho Chapter for its superb programs, services and advocacy for those battling this devastating disease; NOW, THEREFORE, I, C.L. “BUTCH” OTTER, Governor of the State of Idaho, do hereby proclaim June 2, 2007, to be FIND A CURE FOR ALZHEIMER’S DAY in Idaho.
