WHEREAS, Idahoans increasingly look to the water for recreation and relaxation; and WHEREAS, approximately one-quarter of Idaho’s citizens will enjoy some form of boating this year; and WHEREAS, the number of boating accidents and fatalities demonstrates that boaters should place a high priority on knowing and obeying the rules of safe boating; and WHEREAS, a review of fatal boating accidents shows that over three-fourths of the victims were not wearing a life jacket and could have survived if they had taken this precaution; and WHEREAS, the theme of this year’s National Safe Boating Week, “Wear It,” emphasizes the fact that life jackets save lives; NOW, THEREFORE, I, C. L. “BUTCH” OTTER, Governor of the State of Idaho, do hereby proclaim the week of May 19 through 25, 2007 to be SAFE BOATING WEEK in Idaho, and I encourage all Idahoans involved in recreational boating to put a high priority on safety by knowing and obeying the rules of safe boating and by showing courtesy and consideration on the water.
