WHEREAS, there are approximately 75 million licensed drivers age 50 and older in the United States, constituting more than a third of all drivers on the nation’s roadways; and WHEREAS, according to U.S. government figures, this percentage is expected to increase significantly in the years ahead, increasing the need for safe driving practices; and WHEREAS, to ensure 50-plus drivers stay safe behind the wheel, the AARP Driver Safety Program has provided instruction over the past 28 years to more than 11 million participants seeking to refresh their driving skills ; and WHEREAS, the AARP Driver Safety Program is designed to educate participants about how best to reduce traffic violations, crashes and chances for injuries; and WHEREAS, the AARP Driver Safety Program offers those preparing to take to the road important strategies for staying crash-free, insight into the challenges of city vs. rural driving and suggestions for handling aggressive drivers; NOW, THEREFORE, I, C.L. “BUTCH” OTTER, Governor of the State of Idaho, do hereby proclaim the month of October 2007, to be AARP DRIVER SAFETY PROGRAM MONTH in Idaho.
