WHEREAS, the Board of Trustees of the Idaho State Historical Society has the
authority and duty “to encourage and promote interest in the history of Idaho”;
and
WHEREAS, Eugene Place has served as a trustee for nine (9) years, with his term
of service ending December 31 2007; and
WHEREAS, during his time on the Board of Trustees, Eugene Place regularly
visited with museums, historical societies, local preservation committees and
other organizations in eastern Idaho to enhance the Idaho State Historical
Society’s relationship with these organizations and to provide assistance to
them on behalf of the Idaho State Historical Society; and
WHEREAS, Eugene Place was to many Idahoans the person they most associated with
representing the Idaho State Historical Society and in that role brought honor
and recognition to the Idaho State Historical Society; and
WHEREAS, during his tenure as a trustee the Idaho History Day program faced
possible discontinuation until Eugene Place provided financial support to retain
the program and continued supporting the program throughout his tenure to the
benefit of thousands of Idaho schoolchildren; and
WHEREAS, Eugene Place consistently reminded his fellow trustees of their
fiduciary responsibilities in overseeing a healthy Idaho State Historical
Society budget; and
WHEREAS, Eugene Place served as a compassionate liaison between the Board of
Trustees and the staff of the Idaho State Historical Society; and
WHEREAS, Eugene Place accomplished all of this service on behalf of the people
of Idaho with integrity, humor, intelligence and enthusiasm, and made
significant contributions to improving the Idaho State Historical Society and
promoting interest in Idaho history; NOW, THEREFORE, I, C.L. “Butch” Otter, Governor of the State of Idaho, do hereby proclaim that January 22, 2008 be
in Idaho
