WHEREAS, the Calam Shrine
Temple was founded 100 years ago on July 15, 1908; is located in Lewiston, and
has 600 members who reside in northern Idaho from Riggins north to the Canadian
border and east and west within Idaho; and WHEREAS, the Shriners are the
oldest philanthropic fraternity in the United States with its first hospital
opening in 1922; and WHEREAS, the Shriners opened a
hospital in 1924 in Spokane, Washington, moved four times and currently are in a
state-of-the-art facility; and WHEREAS, the Shriners operate 22
hospitals for children in North America with a 2008 budget of almost $850
million; and WHEREAS, four of these hospitals
are burn centers featuring the most advanced pediatric burn care available and
the other 18 hospitals specialize in treating a number of conditions; and WHEREAS, the Shriners Hospitals
specialize in treatment for children up to 18 years of age, with care provided
at absolutely no cost to the patient or the patient's family; and WHEREAS, the Calam Shrine Temple
conducts screening clinics throughout the northern Idaho area several times a
year to locate and assist local children who need certain specialized care, and
these clinics are advertised throughout the school system and the medical
community; and WHEREAS, in 2007, as a direct
result of Calam Shriners, an additional 195 deserving children of northern Idaho
received state-of-the-art, cutting-edge pediatric medical care at no cost to
themselves or their families. NOW, THEREFORE, I, C. L. “BUTCH” OTTER, Governor of the State of Idaho, do hereby recognize and commend the Calam Shrine Temple for its 100 years of service to the citizens of Idaho and proclaim July 13 - July 19, 2008 as “CALAM SHRINE TEMPLE WEEK” in Idaho.
