WHEREAS, Idaho Legal Aid Services is the primary provider of civil legal services to low-income Idahoans who cannot afford to pay private attorneys; and WHEREAS, Idaho Legal Aid Services and its predecessors have provided high quality legal services to low-income Idahoans statewide since 1968 through its seven regional service offices and its legal hotlines; and WHEREAS, Idaho Legal Aid Services is a nonprofit law firm, governed by a volunteer statewide board of directors appointed by the Idaho State Bar, local Bar associations, and community groups serving low-income Idahoans; and WHEREAS, Idaho Legal Aid Services and its predecessors have represented tens of thousands of low-income Idahoans on civil matters involving domestic violence, child abuse, elder issues, Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, veterans benefits, evictions, fair housing, consumer protection, food stamps, mental health, guardianships, child support, wage claims, public housing, Native American issues, and migrant farmworker issues; and WHEREAS, Idaho Legal Aid Services’ representation enables those with limited income and assets the ability to access Idaho’s judicial system and exercise their full rights as citizens; and WHEREAS, Idaho Legal Aid Services is working to more efficiently serve more clients, to satisfy the legal needs of Idaho’s growing low-income population; NOW, THEREFORE, I, C.L. “BUTCH” OTTER, Governor of the Great State of Idaho, do hereby proclaim the week of June 23-27, 2008 to be LEGAL AID’S 40TH ANNIVERSARY WEEK and call upon all Idahoans to acknowledge and celebrate Legal Aid’s 40th anniversary.
