WHEREAS, there are approximately 75 million licensed drivers age 50 and older in the U.S. which constitutes more than a third of all drivers on the nation’s roadways; and WHEREAS, according to U.S. government figures, this percentage is expected to increase significantly in the years ahead, increasing the need for safe driving practices; and WHEREAS, to ensure 50+ drivers stay safe behind the wheel, over the past 28 years, the AARP Driver Safety Program has provided instruction to more than 11 million participants seeking to refresh their driving skills; and WHEREAS, the AARP Driver Safety Program is designed to educate participants about how best to reduce traffic violations, crashes, and chances for injuries; update drivers’ knowledge about relevant laws; and provide safe driving strategies to compensate for age-related changes that affect one’s driving ability; and
WHEREAS, May is a peak month for
spring travel, whether to view Idaho’s beautiful countryside or just to visit
friends and family; Now, Therefore, I, C.L. “BUTCH”
OTTER, Governor of the State of Idaho, do hereby proclaim the month of May 2008,
to be AARP Driver Safety Month in Idaho.
