Governor C.L. “Butch” Otters tours the Hilex Poly plant in Jerome along with the Director of the Idaho Department of Labor Roger Madsen, and the Director of the Idaho Department of commerce Don Dietrich. Hilex Poly is the world’s largest manufacturer of plastic carry-out bags.

The Governor watches as one of the companies bags is quality control tested for durability. The Hilex Poly company is promoting an effort to increase plastic bag recycling to save resources, protect the environment, and increase market share. Hilex Poly set a voluntary target of 40% recycled content in its bag production by 2015. The Jerome plant employs 132 Idahoans.

Jerome High School - October 14, 2009
Governor Otter takes part in a seismograph demonstration during an earth sciences class at Jerome High School,
utilizing a new educational tool called the Idaho Education Network (IEN). The IEN allows several schools to
interactively participate in classes underway at another Idaho high school. In the demonstration, students
from Jerome High School, Weiser High School, and Shoshone High School were linked together
and able to learn about the seismograph and talk with the Governor at the same time.

Governor Otter visited with university faculty, staff, students,
and other citizens all day while in Moscow

As part of the “Leadership Summit” following the inauguration ceremony, Governor Otter addressed a large group of statewide leaders in education, government, and business about the role of higher education in economic development. President Nellis called the group together to engage in conversation about a number of topics, including the goals and opportunities of higher education as a force for making the economy stronger.
